Vital Points Karate
Muay Thai vs Karate??……which is better to get into?
Please answer this if you know what you are talking about………..Iam looking to get into one of this two martial arts: Muay Thai or Shitoryu Karate( they are the closest schools near my house) I want something that is good for self defense. I hear that karate is excellent for street use since it has knife defenses, vital point strikes and so on. Does muay thai work as good as karate on the streets??
It’ll take you longer to become well versed in Karate, however Karate would be better for self defense than Muay Thai.
Why? Self defense isn’t just a matter of knocking the other guy out first. If you’re trying to defend yourself from an attacker, that means you’re trying not to be hit, wounded. Muay Thai will teach you a little bit on how to dodge and avoid punches, kicks. Karate will teach you that as well, and at the same time it’ll teach you blocks. From my understanding of Shitoryu, it has a great focus on defensive tactics, especially in regards to blocking. And if you’re talking self defense, surely you’d want the art with better and more defensive moves?
Karate has more striking techniques than Muay Thai would teach you. I guarantee you, you’ll have a wider range of kicks and upper body strikes to choose from. Don’t be fooled; elbow and knee strikes aren’t exclusive to Muay Thai. Like I said before, probably everything you’d learn in Muay Thai, you’d learn in Karate, and more. Along those lines, and although I’m not positive, Karate will most likely teach some grappling techniques. Perhaps nothing major, no wrestling or “ground game” so to speak, but it will probably teach some joint locks, wrist locks, small digit manipulation, so on. So while Muay Thai teaches just punches and kicks, Karate will take that a step further and show you how to disable or control your opponent.
And, don’t get me wrong, Muay Thai is a great art, by all means. Except all I’ve ever seen it do is fast track people into being able to unleash pain on their enemies. That’s great for arena combat or if you’re already versed in martial arts and are looking to add to your repertoire. However, you fall into neither of those categories. You want self defense, not just raw damage dealing ability.

MARTIAL KNOWLEDGE

Do you even know the diffference between kung fu and karate? Do you think wing chun is a chinese dish?
The different styles can even be related to shapes or geometry – squares, triangles and circles.
Because karate, judo, kung fu, and tae kwon do have been more prominent than other forms in popular culture, from film to sporting events, many people mistakenly believe that all martial arts are Asian in origin. In fact, diverse cultures throughout history from Europe, Africa, the Americas, and the Middle East have also given birth to their own martial art forms.
Or a combination of triangles with small circles as can be seen in chinese trapping, wrist locks or Aikido entry and endings.
Despite the array of martial arts and styles, most of them share common techniques, and so they can be organized into broad categories that facilitate understanding. The primary way of classifying martial arts is by the basic physical technique they use: striking or grappling.
If you’ve never studied a martial art, your awareness of them most likely starts at Bruce Lee movies and ends with the stylized theatrics of The Matrix. If that’s the case, you may not realize from what you’ve gleaned onscreen that there are an estimated 200 unique kinds of martial arts, and within these, thousands of different styles. Karate, judo, kung fu, and tae kwon do are among the most popular and well-known of the martial arts in the U.S., but there are numerous others.
MARTIAL TRAINING TO LIVE
Training is hard..really hard. The most hard is to get started and its down-hill easy from there. What you need is a martial arts machine – something new and exciting to get you off your fat ass.
Search for it – martial arts machine – http://www.google.com/search?q=martial+arts+machine
Whats important now is to do something, start with brief excercise, get into stretching, shadow box, then step up and train hard.
Or find a martial arts school in your area – http://www.google.com/search?q=martialarm+schools+directory
GO to the local phone book and look up kung fu or karate. Then give them a call, go along or take your kid.
Everyone knows someone who knows how to fight – with fists, knives, weapons, guns, tactical, sensless, whatever but START!
CONCLUSION IS ACTION
Life is not scarey but maybe your lack of skill, self confidence and personal competance is making you scared.
Be pro-active and look, then choose and participate in action whether alone with a martial arts training machine or go to a dojo.
If you are not liking what you see in the mirror, afraid to go down a dark street, scared of a potential confrontation then train now.

We cant all be Bruce Lee but you also dont want to be an emotional and physical punching bag do you?

Learn Aikido in 80 minutes!
strikes aikido

How come Aikido has none/insufficient striking?
How come it hardly has ANY striking? Striking is vital for an effective style.
you don’t see much striking because
A: alot of instructors don’t know the ways to strike while doing techniques
B: it can make practice more dangerous with lower level students
a skillful and knowledgable aikido practiotioner can hit you multiple times while they do techniques, but it isn’t necessary because once they put you on the ground and pin you they don’t need to because you’re no longer a threat. and if you know the traditional way of performing some techniques you wouldn’t worry that there isn’t any striking, because if you perform them that way or with conviction then whoever you are using them on either has a broken arm, skull, or is dead.
and i mean that in all seriousness
to keyboard warrior:
aikido doesn’t suck, any true martial artist would never say something like that regarding any other martial art.
oh and jigoro kano (founder of judo) once said to morihei ueshiba (founder of aikido) after seeing him practice aikido “that is the true judo”
so if the founder judo had that much respect for aikido perhaps you should rethink your view on it and maybe try it out to better understand what it means.
and i know it would help with judo, because to throw in judo you must grab ahold of your opponent and in aikido techniques begin when your opponent grabs ahold of you
