First Karate Class
What can I expect in my first karate class?

I’m going to a Shotokan Karate “taster” class that is kind of for people to give it a try and see if they like it. I’ve done Japanese Ju-Jitsu for a few years, but have absolutely no idea about karate (which is why I’ve decided to go).

What sort of things will I be doing? Is karate really just strikes and kata? If not, enlighten me :D

It depends on the teacher.

Some may just have you watch.

Some may teach you simple things like how to properly execute a few different kinds of punches and blocks.

The first class usually teaches you courtesy and protocol.
Things like:
Bowing into and out of class,
Saluting the teacher,
Courtesy,
How to properly tie your belt,
etc.

Shotokan also includes Kumite and Kihon.

Kumite is sparring (lit. Meeting of hands.) Beginners sparring is very closely watched and is “light contact” i.e.; attempting to get your attack past your opponents defense. Many teachers do not allow you to spar until you achieve a certain rank. (This policy is often based on how well a person can control their attacks, it prevents accidental injuries.)

Kihon is a Japanese term meaning “basics” or “fundamentals.” The practice and mastery of kihon is essential to all advanced training, and includes the practice of correct body form and breathing, while practicing basics such as stances, punches, kicks, blocks, and thrusts, but it also includes basic representative kata

Karate (when properly taught) is also PHILOSOPHY (big time!)

The big thing about any martial art is to approach it as a form of self discipline, not as a means of bashing somebody’s head in!

Any martial art works for self defense provided:
You have studied it long enough,
Mastered the basics and
Never forget that, no matter how good you are, there is always somebody out there better at it than you are!

Yes the tonfa is defensive. You other 2 questions are confusing. But I’ll attempt to respond.
