what kind of MARTIAL ARTS that could BEST yourself in the streets?

i’m planning to take up taekwondo for self defense. i just want to learn how to defend myself just in case of emergency. i had a friend who got snatched and was punched in the face. she said that she wanted to defend herself but she didn’t even know how to punch. so im wondering what martial arts should i take? hope u cud help me decide. biggie thanks :)
CORRECTION (question):what kind of MARTIAL ARTS that could BEST DEFEND yourself in the streets?

The fact is that the first two answers are off base slightly. Most martial arts teach you devistating techniques for when you are forced to defend yourself. You definetly get physical.

As for Anthony yes Muyay thai and Ju Jitsu are both excellent styles, but neither are infalible.

Please keep in mind many people on here do not realize the difference between self defense and street fighting. A street fight is a clash of two ego’s that requires two willing participants, that can be avoided 99% of the time if one person refuses to fight. Self defense is the one% where you are given no other option.

Any martial art will work for self defense provided you have the following:

1) A good instructor who understands raelism.

2) A school that trains realisticly, with progressive resistance.

3) One that you train hard.

I would resomend that you find everything that is available in your area. Next doa search on her to find out what to look for in a school, and what to look out for. Just type in something like “How to find a good dojo”.

Armed with this knowledge, visit each school and decide which one is going to be the best bet for teaching you self defense. In the end a style will not defend you. What will do that is YOU, and you will do it with how well you have been taught, how realisticly you have trained it, and how hard you have worked it.

i myself am partial to Okinawin karate, such as the style I train, Isshin-ryu, but that is because I have an excellent instructor. It makes all the difference.

Should I pay any attention to my scale?? Is my small gain due to increased strength training/muscle?

So I know the scale isn’t the most reliable measure of one’s fitness level, but I’m still a little thrown. Here’s my situation: over the past year or a little more, I lost about 20 pounds through better eating habits and exercise. I was running 5 miles, 3 times/week and strength training 2 times/week. Then in December I stopped running because it was starting to bother my knees, and began doing kickboxing 2 times/week instead – and I also added an extra strength training session. But I’ve noticed that since November-ish, the scale says that I’ve gained about 5-6 pounds (I was 125 and now it says I’m 131). I’m 5’7″ and in great shape, and my clothes are fitting and looking just as good now as they did in November, but I’m still bothered by the 5-6 lb gain according to the scale. Is it because I’m now doing less cardio and more strength training? Do you think it’s due to increased muscle mass? Because like I already said, my clothes are fitting fantasically…

I would say yes, if you are doing strength training you should see a gain in muscle mass and weight. If you feel and look good then you shouldn’t worry about anything. The same thing is happening to me. ive lost about 20 lbs over the past year and now the scale is going up again, but im looking skinnier so I can only asssume it is the muscle mass.
