what should I train in at this point?
I have spent two years studying Shotokan karate.
Recently, I moved to Harrisonburg VA for college. There is club Jiu jitsu, Club Tae Kwon Do, and A club that does some kind of bujutsu.
I feel that the Tae kwon do runs exactly counter to what I have learned thus far… that it may ruin my technique in that (I am far from done studying Shotokan)
There are also a few dojos in the area (not shotokan)… but I don’t know what I should do. Any suggestions?
My main problem with Tae Kwon Do is that it teaches people to be too upright when they fight.
Shotokan is a “harder” and more physical martial art. I would stay on that same path if I were you. And since you already have some stand up skills, why don’t you incorporate some BJJ into your game.
I trained Kempo for about 3 years before I started BJJ. Its been about 3 1/2 years now, and I feel I’m very well rounded because of it.
Besides, when I started training Muay Thai and MMA with BJJ, the Kempo (like your shotokan) background made my learning curve MUCH shorter than others that started at the same time as me.
Hope this helps.
