Martial Arts Bowie
What is this movie? Martial arts/action/historical?
I saw this on cable between 1997-1999. It did NOT star Jet Li; he was not in the movie at all. The film was set in China during the early 1900′s. It opened with a battle between a group of heros and the Japanese occupiers. The heros were Chinese martial artists, bald except for one long braid of hair. They had large tattoos on the upper part of their chests, which indentified their group. They fought using short swords which resembled very large Bowie knives. They didn’t use guns…I think it was against their code of honor, or something like that. The Japanese, of course, fought with guns and katanas. There was a long, drawn out battle between the Japanese commanding officer and the main hero. As I recall, he died at the end of the movie.
I think the movie is “Once Upon a Time in China” and it did star Jet Li as the hero…

Karate Knife Defense

What is the best Martial Art for self defense?
I heard people say Muay Thai,Brazilian Jiujitsu,Shotokan Karate,Boxing, and Kung fu.What is the best for self defense? Also which is best for Anti-Weapons (such as gun’s and knife’s)?
First of all, MMA and BJJ will definitely not help you in self defense in any way whatsoever, they doesn’t deal with multiple opponents at all, they have nonexistent weapons training and works on the assumption that you don’t want to escape and fight till either you or your opponent pass out or submit, exactly the opposite of self defense and expect you to work within a ruleset which is completely unnecessary unless you want to fight in competitions, additionally BJJ focuses mainly on ground fighting which is the last place you want to be in a real fight because if there are multiples then no matter how good you are, you’re done for, plus in a survey recently done by instinctive combatives UK it was found that only 12% of 1 on 1 confrontations with unarmed opponents go to the ground.additionally if you go the ground against more than 1 opponent or an armed opponent you have no chance of winning.

I’d say for self defense A combination of muay thai, krav maga and ninjutsu would be the best. ninjutsu doesn’t have much in the way of alive training but it gives you a very very detailed familiarity with the body’s joints and general anatomy which is especially useful when used in conjuction with muay thai and krav, additionally Krav is renowned for being one of the best anti weapons martial arts there is. So basically with muay thai, krav maga and ninjutsu you have all bases covered
1) Powerful, fast and efficient striking from MT.
2)Simply practical self defense techniques from Krav eg dealing with an armed attacker, improvising weapons, dealing with multiples etc and good take down defenses to ensure you stay on your feet.
3)Getting used to whatever you can including most things frowned upon by sporting martial arts such as biting eye gouging grabbing the trachea, striking the back of the head etc and a very comprehensive understanding of joint locks, stand up grappling and general anatomy.
