How come Karate looks kind of boring?

Hello! I am very interested in joining Karate!

However, yesterday I looked up videos on people training by themselves, and it looks like they practice soo slow and are punching/kicking thin air. It doesn’t look like they are putting effort into it.

Am I off to a bad start already, thinking Karate is boring? :(

It sounds like your speaking of “Kata” (form) which is only one aspect of training in traditional Japanese karate.

Why don’t you look up Aikido? I practice Aikido for 10 years now and Shotokan since I was 5 and I recommend Aikido based on your question, since you seem to be more focused on the training exercises. Aikido is very enjoyable imho and there are tons of clips and info on the web.

I’m not trying to sway you and I don’t think anyone should impose their opinion since this is a personal choice. You should be exposed to as much information as possible and form an objective opinion. I also recommend that you research a few instructors and dojos (the ones that are most accessible to you anyway) and visit them accordingly :)

Edit: Everyone is assuming that you’re looking up trash. There’s a lot of quality info on the web. I can’t tell you how many students join the dojo and absolutely hate practicing kata, find out that they’ve wasted time and money, and leave.
I always research before committing to anything and it seems that you have done yours; you already know that you are not going to enjoy that aspect of training.

Keep doing what you’re doing, learn about the different philosophies behind each art and research the instructors and dojos and you might find the training that’s cut out for you.
