Avoid the ATA. Avoid schools that focus on their stupid trophies. Avoid schools that do not focus on teaching the art. Avoid so called champion schools. Anything has “Black Belt” in the title of it should be avoided.
Look for a traditional school with a Sensei who has serious qualifications, can provide references outside of their own art and dojo and association as well as one that has the Sensei in charge and not the students or “customers”.
It is easy to tell quality and how serious students are when you walk into a dojo. If the Sensei speaks softly and people listen then it is possibly a good dojo that emphasizes training and learning over belt rank achievement.
On the note about looking for one that has champions…there are many mcdojo out there owned by champions who think that means they can teach when in fact they are mostly a joke. There are no real world champions or even national champions anymore at all…to many organizations.
Take a few classes or at least watch three or four. When it feels right without some stupid lame sales pitch you should trust your gut.
Edit – if you are doing a free class just wear sweats and a t-shirt. If you have signed up buy a uniform from the dojo and wear that. Millions of people, including myself, wear glasses and study martial arts.
