Can anyone explain to me the main differances between TaeKwonDo and Karate?
I have a paper to write and would like these to be my topics.
Tae Kwon Do translates as “Hand Foot Philosophy” or “The way of the hand and foot”.
Karate means “empty hand”.
Karate is Okinawan or Japanese.
Tae Kwon Do could be very loosely translated as “Korean Karate”.
Tae Kwon Do is recoginzed by the International Olympic Committee as a sport.
Most Karate systems employ weapons training as part of their curriculum, most TKD schools do not.
The strikes and stances are very similar, only minor differences. TKD has a much higher percentage of “high kicks” and “jumping kicks”, and generally employs kicks more often than Karate.
Both curriculum’s generally include “sport/competition”, “self defense” and “forms” aspects. A karate form is called a “kata”, a tae kwon do form is called a “Poomse”.
Of course there are exceptions to all of these generalities.
