Martial Arts Weapons: A Matrixing Primer!
People are always asking me questions about the various Martial Arts Weapons. Why are they odd shaped and does a person use them? What’s the best Weapon in Aikido, or Kenpo, or jujitsu, or whatever.
The truth of this matter of sharp and shiny things is expressed in a concept so simple that most people never really figure it out. There is, you see, an easy way to understand what the swords and knives and things are, and this will give intuitive grasp as to how they are used. That simple notion is…geometry.
Self defense weapons, no matter what the shape, are based on a straight line. The simplest and most basic is a pole. The pole is used for two things, bashing and poking.
Put a knife on the end of the pole and you have a spear. This is a pole with a sharp end. It is used for poking, and more delicate bashing.
Shorten that pole and sharpen it all the way, and you have a sword. A Jian, or Chinese Tai Chi Chuan sword is a rather lengthy knitting needle. It is used for poking, and for extremely delicate one inch bashing using only the tip.
Curve the Jian and you have a samurai sword. Or a cutlass or some other big sounding name. Good for poking, but especially bashing.
Shorten the long edged weapon and you have a knife. Good for poking and Close Quarter bashing, of a sort. Easily hidden, great for opening boxes, and swell for putting a few nicks in that mugger who tries to take your wallet, grab your wife, invade your home, and so on.
So, knife to sword to pole to even gun…the tool is ultimately described by a line. The line can be hinged not at all or many times, or handled with little handles (a tonfa) poking out the side, and in other ways. And the the ultimate geometry of all martial arts weapons is merely assessing whether the shape of the tool best supports poking or bashing.

Your fitness level in any martial art will depend on the instructors focus. If the instructor is focused on being in shape then you will be also. If his focus is on fighting well then you should be able to fight. However, neither is guaranteed. Kick boxing involves lots of movement so the just the practice of it demands you be in decent shape. Krav maga is one of the last “methods” of fighting I would recommend. Too many people out there that just teach of bunch of techniques claiming to know 3 or more martial arts. The same can be said for most MMA schools. Mainstream fads have now even hit martial arts. There are good schools of all kinds out there but It is very hard to find a good school with legitimate credentials and a proficient and knowledgeable instructor. Hopefully YOUR focus will guide you to the right place. Don’t doubt your own common sense.
