kickboxing-rebuilding fighting confidence?

i have been kickboxing for 10 months nearly. however the last 2-3 have not been anywhere near serious due to injury and my studies for my last year of school, and hence laziness and kicked in.

however i was involved in an altercation the other night, and instead of my instincts kicking in, i was stiffened up and could not think straight. when i try to think back to the altercation it kind of a blur. in this altercation no swings were thrown, as i refused to fight this drunk person, however there were many chance for me to hit him, but i felt almost afraid to throw the punches and kicks i have learnt for so long.

after when i thought about it, i put it down to the fear of being hit. i have spoken to a few people and they have said i need to rebuild my confidence in fighting, does anyone have any tips on doing this?

can you say ADRENALINE? this is why a lot of martial arts training amounts to zero when you get into fights outside of the womb that is the training hall. safety is gone, uncertainty reigns supreme, and the adrenaline flows faster than sweat from your pores.

dont believe the cognitive fears you got, you have the skills, and the ability, but the adrenaline caused distortion of mental function. this is medical fact, and no instructor I know of teaches people that fact. your moves will fail you if you do nothing. the perception is getting you to take action, to fight or flight. the fear is exaggerated and is done to make you run and survive, or to fight and survive.

knowing this you can forget about being hard on yourself. it wasnt your training that failed, it was your interpretation of your thoughts.

you will be confident until it happens again. but next time, you will tell yourself that you are capable, and you can do it. the brain gives you options starting at the worse case scenario, so go past these to the option of fight back. until you act either way you will be drunk in the illusion that the brain presents, and it s forcing you to act, but many people stand there in panic.

trust me when I say that if you fight back the feeling goes, and teh adrenaline has prepared your body for war, and it goes if you run. you use the adrenaline for a purpose. dont stand there and fall deeper into it, ACT straight away before it has a grip on you.

straight up, it happens to more people than can be man enough to admit it. but experience in it will lesson its effects as you realise that you have the skills to waste the opponent. if you lose by standing there, you have the chance to win by fighting back.

take action and dictate the terms, dont fall for the first thought that runs through your mind.

If you train for the right mindset, it will.
