How do I get into fighting for MMA?

I live right outside Columbus, Ohio. My first BJJ class is Wednesday. I will be training BJJ and Kickboxing once a week. How do I get into mma fighting amateur wise?
To get better you have to take risks and you learn by mistake you can’t get experience in mma if you don’t try it. You can also pick up stuff by fighting other people. Neither of you answered my question. If i was asking for advice about how long to wait you both would of helped. If I wanted to wait a few years before trying to spar I wouldn’t be asking this.

I can see what you are saying by taking risks and getting out there and just doing it but MMA is not one of those sports where you can just go out there and expect to learn. Say you go out there inexperienced and wind up on the ground in the first few seconds of the fight and find yourself tapping to a submission, what have you really learned?? That you need to learn how to fight off of the ground…avoid the takedown, maybe a little submission defense?? Well no kidding, the same goes for getting clipped and winding up getting knocked out, what have you learned there?? Keep your hands up?? MMA is long past the early days, where you can just go and swing for the fences and hope that you connect. The sport has evolved to a more technical stand-point. There is nothing wrong with sparring, you can do that in training. If you start your amateur career off and lose more fights than you win, chances are you will never make it into the pros. If you do want to start fighting amateurly though, Columbus is a great city to start…I would talk to your trainer and tell him you are looking to fight, try and find some small local venues (usually found on the internet) and show up. There are plenty of smaller shows out there. Make sure that you video tape all of your fights so that you can go back later and try to resolve any holes in your game (if the fights last that long).

What is a good kind of exercise to improve upper body strength?

I’m going to sign up for an exercise program (kickboxing, pilates etc.) but I don’t know what kind would be the best if I specifically want to work on my upper body strength.

All advice is appreciated! 10 points to best answer!

Pilates is great for improving upper body strength and it also increases fitness and improves flexibility too, which is a good bonus.

Is this a good schedule for an aspiring MMA fighter?

Hey, I’m 15 yrs old and a female. I love taking these classes, it keeps me busy and out of trouble. I go to a MMA gym here in Vegas. I’ve been doing kickboxing for about 6 months now and jiu jitsu for about 4 weeks. I want to be a mixed martial artist when I’m older. I take boxing/kickboxing and brazilian jiu jitsu so far.

The jiu jitsu class is an hour but we stay later than that. like sometimes 2-3 hours over. just rolling with eachother.

Schedule:

Monday- Kickboxing, jiu jitsu (no gi)
Tuesday- Kickboxing
Wednesday- Kickboxing, jiu jitsu (gi)
Thursday- Kickboxing
Friday- Kickboxing
Saturday- Jiu jitsu (gi)

Is that any good? Thxs

You should take up Wrestling in your gym also.

If you want to become a MMA fighter , you must do some wrestling.

Stand-up/Striking – Kickboxing
Takedowns : Wrestling
Ground/Submissions – Brazilian jiu jitsu

Here :

Monday : KB , BJJ
Tuesday – KB
Wednesday – KB , BJJ
Thursday – Wrestling
Friday – BJJ
Saturday – KB , BJJ and Wrestling all together. (Come on it’s a Saturday)
