Japanese Martial Arts Aikido

Martial Arts and Fitness? Beginner?
Hello everyone,
I am 14 and I’m struggling with losing weight (I am currently a little overweight). My ultimate goal is to have a tone, athletic body. Nothing bodybuilder-like though.
I’ve been told that one of the best things to do around my age is join sports, and I’m really interested in martial arts! But I’ve never done any, I’m a complete beginner. I know there are many different types of martial arts, so what should I join? I’m mostly interested in kicking because my legs need more work than my upper body does.
I have a little obsession with everything Japanese-related, so I was thinking about Aikido but I’m not very sure.
Thanks in advance!
I have to agree with Ned. If you want to do Aikido, go for it. You’ll still build up a good sweat, but I don’t believe there’s too much in terms of kicking or even punching – a little bit, I believe, but not a lot. It’s mainly about grappling or joint locks and such, although someone who has more knowledge/experience with Aikido could explain it so much better than I.
I’ve always had a fascination with Kendo. If you can find a Kendo dojo, I’d say definitely check it out. I think it’d be wonderful for your fitness, and it’s Japanese-related without being too generic. Not to say karate is generic, but, I think there’s a much bigger market for Karate McDojos than there is for Kendo McDojos.
If you really want to do kicks, perhaps check out Karate places. Just keep in mind that even in Kendo or Aikido, footwork and leg strength is important. So no matter what martial art you take up, your legs will get worked.
Also, if you mean your legs are especially chubby and need to lose weight, there’s really no such thing as spot reduction. By working out you’re going to lose weight where weight needs to be lost. Even if you mean that your legs aren’t chubby, but you want to tone them, then just being active and athletic in any sport or martial art, you’ll tone them up.
Really don’t worry about getting a bodybuilder-like body. That’s a common misconception to people fresh to the athletic/fitness scene. They think that you just get that kind of a body by accident, but it really takes years of hard work with that body as a goal in mind. I wish it was as easy as, “Oops, I worked out today, now I’m totally buff!” But it doesn’t go like that.
Keep in mind too that healthy eating habits are important to maintaining a healthy or athletic body. Don’t pursue any fad diets, just eat right, that’s all you really need.

Street Kickboxing Club
Which style of fighting is best to learn for self defence in streets?
well i grew up watching all those van damme films in the late 80′s/early 90′s (bloodsport/kickboxer/no rereat no surrender) and i guess those films inspired loads of people to take up karate.
but karate is shit really and crap for defending yourself if you get in trouble in a club or something, so yeah whats the best style to learn for self defence, boxing/kickboxing (other).
don’t say mma, because mma is something you move onto once you’ve mastered one fighting style.
Oh my gosh, you people don’t get it.
It is not the martial art, it’s the martial artist. I study karate and i can (and have) defended myself, and i can (and have) beaten the crap out of people who have attacked me or my friends.
You can study the “best MA”* and suck at it, and somebody else can study the “worst MA”* and be the best at it and i’d put my money on the other guy.
Whoever has trained harder, put more into it than the other guy, that is the guy that will win.
A real martial artist knows that there is no such thing as a better or worse martial art, it’s all the individual.
A martial art is a tool, some tools fit some people better than they fit others, and vice versa. I study a style that fits me well, that doesn’t mean it would fit somebody else well. I don’t study Muay Thai because it doesn’t fit me, does that mean i suck? No. Does that mean Muay Thai is a bad martial art? No. I do better at the art i study than at another art, neither is better. It’s all about what fits the martial artist.
Karate is not **** at all. Neither is boxing or kickboxing. I know a man who studies karate and can not only defend himself, he can beat the crap out of any MMA guy i’ve ever seen. My opinion? Sure, but also that of dozens of people who have been to MMA studied it, and been to other tournaments.
Don’t say something is **** just because you don’t like it, or because it didn’t fit you, or because you didn’t work hard enough at it. That’s not what a real martial artist would do. You can’t say karate is **** because you haven’t done it or it didn’t fit you. Don’t trash a different martial art than your own.
Best martial art for self defense is: The person himself. The will and the training he was willing to put into a martial art that fit him will come out when he needs it. Put 100% into it, and that’s what you’ll get out.
